Code Challenge & Proposal

zhaoming
Dear all,

I am a graduate student in China, my research interest is mainly about energy-efficient driving navigation system.

The two projects in the context of enviroCar seems interesting, and also a lot of my daily work is related to this field.
It would be great to work on either of the projects in this summer.I already finished the code challenge for visual analytics
of enviroCar tracks and now focusing on the code challenge of quality assurance of enviroCar.

What should be my priority for the proposals? Adding more features for the code challenge or just began research for writing
the proposal and the code challenge just needs to show I got the skills needed?

Best,
Ming

Dear Ming,

sorry for the late response - we were travelling the last days and hence weren't able to discuss this before.

We consider both projects as equally important. Please try to fulfil the code challenges (they may have changed since the initial descriptions before the official acceptance of 52N) and to prepare a good proposal. We're then happy to consider your application.

Best,

Matthes, Arne & Christoph

Code Challenge & Quality Assurance in enviroCar

zhaoming
Dear Sir.,

I tried to do the code challenge of Quality Assurance in enviroCar.

I used a php framework called Laravel to provide simple RESTful API to interact with Mongo DB.I installed the MongoDB php driver & jenssegers/mongodb to set up
the environment.

A simple form was already built and jQuery and Ajax were built to interact with the API.

I found measurements collection has track property, which can be used to decide which track they belong to.First, I get id of all tracks, then for each track,
I used the track id to find all measurements related to that track.

The whole idea worked, but now I do have a serious problem from my approach to the code challenge. For each track, it costs nearly one second to get all the
related measurements, there are 2616 tracks in the Mongo DB dump 52 north provided, that means nearly 40 minutes for the user to wait in front of the browser
for this whole process to finish, which surely is not acceptable.

Do you have some ideas related to the problem I am facing? Also, would it be OK the code just handling part of the 2616 tracks provided?

Best,

Ming

Dear Ming,

sorry for the late reply:

In general, we don't think that the runtime would be crucial when running a quality check on the whole database. One option to speed up the whole process would be to run the quality checks directly on the databasem without transferring data between the client and mongoDB.

Hope this helps, best,

Christoph
