GSoC Geoprocessing Sandbox Challenge

enuilin
Hello, all! My name is Annie. I'm a master's student at University of Wisconsin - Madison, and I've been looking at the GSoC challenges. I've got a working version of the Geoprocessing Sandbox one (done via Java calls to runtime and parsing the results), and I see via here how to upload and run. Some quick questions though:

1) For the class of installed software, is the only required metadata (for the challenge) just Java and Python versions? It doesn't seem like a very complex hierarchy is required in that case. Am I overthinking it?

2) I've tested mine on Linux (Ubuntu & Red Hat) and Windows, and the runtime call varies slightly between the two. This might pop up again when trying to parse other data. What are the working requirements for 52North in terms of supported operating systems?

Thanks!

Hi Annie,

thanks you for your interest.
Let me give some quick answers to your questions:

1) The challenge itself is not very complex, but we are looking forward to receive effective solutions and readable and documented source code. For preparing the proposal you should have installed the Geoprocessing Appstore on your computer. This might be more challenging. Have you already done this? (Can you send us a screenshot of your locally installed version?)

2) For the code challenge it is fine to check Win and Linux. Afterwards, the Geoprocessing Appstore and the sandbox should be compatible with all common os.

We are looking forward to receive your proposal.

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to contact us.

Christin

Re: GSoC Geoprocessing Sandbox Challenge

Hi there,

I've been working on installing it, but I've run into some parts I've confused about. I installed solr 4.10.2 using the instructions here. I've also set up Tomcat and added the geoportal war in (so now it displays the default homepage). What I'm confused about now is this step. The lucene location is /usr/local/etc/lucene, but right now I don't have that lucene folder, and the solr instructions didn't include a step for adding it. Where/how should I download it?

Thanks!
Annie

Hi Annie,

you can skip this part of the installation and follow the steps described here:
This file is already preconfigured in the Geoprocessing Appstore project code.
The index will be created, when you upload your first code package.

When you prepared all steps that are described in the description above, you should have installed a database, solr and a tomcat. The tomcat should contain 3 war files: appstore (Geoprocessing Appstore project on GitHub), GcService (Geoprocessing Appstore Facet project on GitHub) and solr.

Re: GSoC Geoprocessing Sandbox Challenge

Hi there,

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but is the "prepare a war file" aspect just running jar -cvf appstore.war * in the directory containing the entire project (i.e. the folder containing WebContent, src, Additional_Config_Files).  I deployed the war, but I am consistently getting a 404 error and the path appstore\WEB-INF\classes\gpt\config\gpt.xml does not exist in the tomcat7 webapps library.

Step by step of what I did to try to create the war.

1) Download the project from here into a folder (Documents/appstore).
2) Created a war inside the appstore folder named appstore.war using "jar -cvf appstore.war *" (deployment a)
3) Attempted to deploy. Received 404 error.
4) Went into Documents/appstore/WebContent, repeated "jar -cvr appstore.war" command. (deployment b)
5) Tried to deploy that one, too. This time the app won't even start.
6) Looked for appstore\WEB-INF\classes\gpt\config\gpt.xml path. The file exists in deployment (a) but not in (b) at the path appstore/src/gpt/config.

I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: GSoC Geoprocessing Sandbox Challenge

Hello Annie,

Sorry for the late response. It seems the commands you are using are not
working correctly. I used an IDE (Eclipse JEE) to create the .war file
using the export function. Would that be an option for you?

Cheers,

Benjamin
