Reminder: Midterm blog posts due next week

Daniel Nüst
Hi all,

just a friendly reminder that midterm evaluations are coming up and blog
posts describing your work in the first half of GSoC must be ready in a
first *complete version* on Monday June 22nd.

Please re-check the examples and guidelines for blog posts:
https://wiki.52north.org/bin/view/Projects/GSoCGuidelines#Blog_Articles

Our plan is also to require *live demos* by all projects. If you think
that your project is not suitable to be presented live within the next
two weeks get in touch with your mentors and the org admins NOW.

Mid-term evaluations are important and will not be taken lightly by
mentors and org admins - show now what you have achieved and demonstrate
that you will be able to deliver much more during the second half of the
summer, the grace period is over.

That said, I have already seen very promising developments in most
projects and look forward to continue the work with all of you, students
and mentors alike.

Best regards,
Daniel

I have not been contacted yet by all students. Technically, we want
working demos online before Friday so that we can factor in those into
the evaluations. It can be OK if your project is not ready yet, but we
(the organisation) can only judge that if we know what you (students and
mentors) plan to demonstrate.

Therefore, I ask all mentors and students to present, as a reply to this
email on the list, their plan what / how to demonstrate by WEDNESDAY
12:00 CEST.

Thanks for your collaboration!

One quick extension on that topic: For your demo, we also need a short
introductiory text, and if the interaction with the demo is not trivial,
also some user documentation.

For guidance, please check the last years demo descriptions:

Re: Reminder: Midterm blog posts due next week

Christian Danowski

Hi Daniel,

for Adhitya’s demo we intend to do the following steps:

1) create a ‘midterm-demo’-folder in our repository which includes the following contents:

                - source file in Pajek.net-format representing a connection map

                - style configuration file

                - java class that contains runnable code to read the inputs above and create an

  X3D/X3DOM-file as output

- README-file explaining necessary steps to run and understand the demo (like installing an

X3D-Viewer,  explanation of source files, explaining the transformation step from

  Pajekt.net -->  X3D(X3DOM).

- maybe additional X3D/X3DOM-files in a subfolder ‘examples’, which give the user existing

viewable examples that were constructed during the project so far (for instance: displaying

an additional world map in the scene to show the geolocation of vertices).

2) this folder would stay in the repository, thus the user would need to clone the repository to run the demo. Is that okay? Or should everything necessary to run the demo be put on a 52°North-Server?

What is your opinion about our plans?

Regards, Christian

I was not contacted by all students, and none replied to the email
above. Please consider this a final warning and do not take such a
request from your organisation administration lightly, especially not in
the week of the midterms. We need your cooperation to be able to run
GSoC for 6 students, and that means timely responses to emails and
deadlines.

Again, here is what you need to do:

* Send me asap short description of what you want to demo and how, if
you have not done it yet. Important: What are your server requirements?
* Send a short description of the demo and what a user can do with it.
See last years demos for examples. This should include links to your
repo and could also include wiki pages with instructions etc.
* Send me the actual demo _before_ Friday.

Thanks for your help!

/Daniel

Re: Reminder: Midterm blog posts due next week

Aron Karolyi
Hello,

I will not have an online demo of ILWIS-WPS Bridge so far.

My plan is to demonstrate working java tests over shared screen.
As a demo, I can share these tests with instructions.

Best Regards,
Aron

Ok, I understand.

Could you also create a screencast? The goal of the demo is to allow
users to better understand how your project works without running a
software on their on computers.

Thanks Aron!

Could you extend the video when you show the feature test? I.e. can you
show the lines of Java code that created the features that you show in
Ilwis? Maybe you can open the features "live" after they were created.
That way the viewer can better follow you.

The same for the raster: Please highlight/show the Java code that
created the Raster that you visualize.

@Martin, Benjamin, Bas: Please feel also free to provide some feedback
on the video.

/Daniel
