Weekly Report #5 - 3D Connection Maps

Adhitya
Hi,

Report Week 5

We are already into Week 5! Time flies when you are working on something really interesting!

Status

  • We have started logging our repository.
  • Investigating / Reading about and testing Extrusion-element to check whether it can be used to display connections
  • Benno, has collected important data for a Connection Map
  • Preparation of midterm demo

Problems

  • We have found that PROTO Declaration was not the way to go, as it is not supported by X3DOM and therefore we are not going to this declaration in our project.

Next tasks

  • Discussion of classification scheme - how can our XML-schema (configuration file) change to support classification of vertices/edges. Classification means e.g. to have different colors for different vertices/edges (maybe dependent to a certain attribute)
  • It will be interesting to include other visualizations such as ribbons and arcs
Regards,

Adhitya

Do you consider a styling language such as CSS? Or is that something
completely different?

/Daniel

I'm guessing you are referring to how we style/color our visual elements.

Whether we use something like CSS which is not the case as the styling is done vis X3D-elements directly.

Cheers,

Adhitya

Re: Fwd: Weekly Report #5 - 3D Connection Maps

Benno Schmidt

Just a short comment: The X3D-styling will be controlled by an XML-based configuration file. The structure of this configuration is quite similar to the OGC-SLD standard ("styled layer descriptors") which is well known in the geo-information community. Color definitions, fonts and text sizes etc. are given as SVG/CSS-parameters there. Here is an example which should be usable to set-up a connection map: https://github.com/cDanowski/worldviz/blob/master/data/WvizConfig.xml

Kind regards, Benno
